Developing Individual Feminism Presents their First Networking Event

47% of young girls, between the ages of 11 and 14, suffer from low self-esteem.

According to Guttmacher Institute’s April 2016 article, American Teens’ Sources of Sexual Health Education, “The share of adolescent females receiving formal instruction about how to say no to sex but receiving no instruction about birth control methods increased from 22% to 26% between 2006–2010 and 2011–2013.” This was the type of instruction that I received. This type of education did NOT work.

Saxon Walker is establishing her first organization, Developing Individual Feminism, with the intent of creating a safe space for teenager to discuss topics and acquire knowledge about issues in their everyday lives. The topics can range from sex and vaginal health to make up, skin care, and self-esteem.

There have always been questions left unanswered or topics that were deemed inappropriate to speak about in my life when it came to women’s sexual health, but Saxon’s purpose behind this business is to discover these taboo topics and provide factual insight to help young girls. Since the most common alternative sources to receive sexual health education are parents, health care providers, and digital media, the organization acts as another source focused on creating a comfortable platform based on providing credible and reliable explanations.

The United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) reports that, “Strong evidence suggests that comprehensive approaches to sex education help young people to delay sex and also to have healthy, responsible and mutually protective relationships when they do become sexually active. Many of these programs resulted in delayed sexual debut, reduced frequency of sex and number of sexual partners, increased condom or contraceptive use, or reduced sexual risk-taking."

“My hope is to create something different by actually showing [the girls] things related to these topics and provide products that they will actually use,” Saxon explains.

The organization will be hosting its start-up event with the hopes to use the experiences of others to start an open dialogue about the various topics previously mentioned, as well as other issues that are important to female maturity. The information gathered here will help Saxon to understand what younger girls may want to know about their bodies in effort to help the prevention of misguided decisions.

Saxon’s first event will be held on September 16, 2017 at LC’s Cafe & Supper Club in Tampa, FL from 4:00-6:30 pm. RSVP by September 1, 2017 through saxonwalker@ymail.com
